Watermelon Smoothie Recipe

How to make a light and refreshing watermelon smoothie recipe.  This is a delicious drink, and your kids will never know that it's healthy for them!  It's sugar free and sweetened with either honey or maple sugar.  It has Greek yogurt for extra protein.

My kids love watermelon.  A few years ago, they went on a hunt for watermelon juice.  I mean if watermelon is basically flavored water, why isn't there a juice?

We finally found one, and it was good.  We used it to make smoothies and frozen pops.

When we make smoothies, they get watered down when we add ice cubes.  I figured watermelon would freeze well since it's mostly water, and I was right.  Since this watermelon smoothie recipe starts with frozen fruit, it has a stronger flavor.

This has a light and refreshing taste.  My kids love it, and it's quick to make.

Watermelon Smoothie Recipe

In the summer, I can find watermelon really cheap at farmer's markets.  I buy a few, eat some over the next few days, and chunk the rest to freeze.  Frozen watermelon should last in the freezer for several months, so you can have yummy watermelon smoothies all winter long.

Milk Choice

I used almond milk to make my watermelon smoothie recipe.  You can use vanilla almond milk or unflavored almond milk.

Coconut milk, oat milk, and cow's milk will all work. It's personal preference, so use what you like and normally have in the fridge.

My kids aren't fans of almond milk, but I don't mind it.  They don't notice it in this recipe, so give it a try if you are looking for a lighter milk option.

Greek Yogurt

I wanted this to more of a smoothie than a freezie, so I added some Greek yogurt.  Greek yogurt is thicker and higher in protein, but you can also use regular yogurt.

A dairy free yogurt will also work.  We aren't dairy free, so I don't use it and can't recommend one.

I use a plain yogurt, but you can try a flavored one.  Lemon, peach, or strawberry yogurt would taste great in this watermelon smoothie recipe.

Sweetener

I use raw honey to sweeten my smoothies.  I get it local from a local farmer.  If you can't find local honey, I highly recommend getting raw honey and not regular honey.

You can also use maple syrup or stevia to sweeten this smoothie.  You may need to adjust the amounts.

Blender

I have a bullet style blender that I picked up at Aldi.  That's what I used for the photos.  I've been very impressed with it for smoothies and more.  It's pretty powerful for the price.  I think I paid around $20 for it.  It's seasonal, so keep checking for it at the store.

I also have a Ninja blender.  I wanted something bigger than the bullet style blender.  I don't use it a lot, so I couldn't justify the cost of the big one.  I found the Ninja Blender and Food Processor combo.  It's perfect for what I need.

If you are feeling extra spunky, try adding a sprig of fresh mint.  I tried a watermelon mint drink at Chick Fil A a few years ago, and I was surprised at how good it was!  It's very refreshing.  I'll admit that it's not something that I thought I would like, but it was really good.
