DIY Fabric Pumpkin Tutorial (No Sew) Plus SVG File for Cricut, Silhouette

Learn how to make a DIY fabric pumpkin tutorial.  This no sew fall craft is easy for kids or adults to make.  It has a free printable to hand cut the leaves or die cut them with the free SVG file for Silhouette or Cricut.

My taste has changed from orange pumpkins to more neutral colors.  When I decorate in the fall, I like to decorate for the entire fall season and not just Halloween and Thanksgiving.

This DIY fabric pumpkin tutorial is no sew.  It's a great way to use up extra fabric that was left over from another project.  You could even use an old shirt, a stained table runner, or other piece of scrap fabric to make it.

I used felt to make the leaves, but you can use a green patterned fabric.  I hand cut mine, but I also have an SVG file to make your own with a die cutter.

DIY Fabric Pumpkin Tutorial (No Sew)

I've seen a bunch of these no sew fabric pumpkins, and they usually start with a roll of toilet paper.  Since it is 2020 and toilet paper is hard to come by, I needed an alternative.

I'm not usually conventional crafter, so my DIY fabric pumpkins didn't need to be round.  I found a berry basket that was sitting on the counter after buying some berries from a local stand.

I don't sew, but my daughter does.  She has bins and bins of scrap fabric.  My fall table runner is black and white buffalo check, so I grabbed some black and white patterns from her stash for this pumpkin craft.

Pumpkin Leaf Template

I used green felt to make my little pumpkin leaf.  You can definitely use green patterned fabric.  I think that could be really cute!

I only made a few DIY fabric pumpkins, so I cut mine by hand.  If you have a Cricut Explore or Cricut Maker you can cut felt.

I use a Silhouette Cameo, and I don't cut felt on it.  Silhouette School has a great tutorial to easily cut felt with a Silhouette.

Instructions

Step #1

Cut fabric into 1” wide strips at least the length of the basket circumference.

If using woven materials, clip the ends of the fabric and tear the two sides apart with your hands to create frayed edges.

Step #2

Cut out the pumpkin pieces using the printable pattern and a piece of green felt.

Step #3

Turn the strawberry basket upside down, the bottom is now the top of the pumpkin.  Start waving the fabric scraps at the top of the pumpkin.  Start at one end of the basket and thread the fabric strip through one slat and loop it back down anther slat.

Step #4

Continue threading the fabric strip through the slats in the basket.

Wrap the fabric strip around and continue back in the opposite direction until the top is fully woven.

Pull the fabric strips tight and if needed glue the ends to secure.

Step #5

Repeat in a similar pattern around the sides of the basket, alternating between the two different fabrics.

Push the woven fabric up to top to squeeze in as many rows of fabric as possible.

Step #6

When at the bottom of the basket, wrap the fabric around the bottom edge to hide the plastic as much as possible.

Using a hot glue gun, glue the ends of the fabrics strips to secure in place on the underside.

Step #7

Add a bit of hot glue to the end of the wine cork and press it in place at the center. Move fabric aside to glue the cork directly onto the plastic basket.

Step #8

Cut a piece of twine approx. 25” long, fold it in half and wrap it around the cork and knot the ends.

Glue the felt pumpkin leaves to the cork stem to finish.

I think it turned out really cute!
