How to Make Instant Pot Apple Cider

Learn how to make Instant Pot apple cider.  This is a delicious fall drink that is made in under half an hour in an electric pressure cooker.  Drink it plain or use it to make other fall drinks.

I've always wanted to make my own apple cider.  To make a true apple cider, you'll need an expensive press.

Or you can make it on the stove or in a slow cooker in several hours.  It's pretty much an all day thing.

With the Instant Pot pressure cooker, you can make homemade apple cider in less than half an hour!  We drink it plain, or you can use it to make other fall drinks or use it in this apple cider syrup recipe.

Before we move on to the recipe, this isn't a true apple cider.  A true apple cider is made by just crushing apples with a press.

You wouldn't add water, an orange, brown sugar, or any spices for a true apple cider.

So without spending $100 or more on a press, you can make Instant Pot apple cider that's pretty close to pressed cider.

What is the Difference Between Apple Juice and Apple Cider?

Apple cider is made from the entire apple.  The apples are crushed into a pulp and then pressed to extract the liquid.

Apple cider is cloudy and darker because it includes bits of the core and the skins, although they aren't big solids.

Apple juice is filtered to remove all pulp.  It's also pasteurized to kill germs to make it shelf stable.

The Best Apples for Apple Cider

It's important to choose the best apples for apple cider.

The following apples will yield the best tasting cider.

  • Pink lady
  • Gala
  • Fuji
  • Jonagold
  • Red Delicious
  • Golden Delicious
  • Johnathon
  • Cortland
  • McIntosh

Don't be afraid to mix two or three kinds of apples.  I used Gala apples for this batch.  I used 3 pounds of apples.

Orange

I like adding an orange to give this a little more flavor and depth.  Orange peel can get bitter in the Instant Pot, so be sure to peel the orange before you add it.

I used one large orange.  You can use two smaller ones.

Spices

You can add ground cinnamon, but it will be messy.  You'll also need to play with the amount because it will depend on how much gets strained out.

It's a lot easier to just toss in cinnamon sticks so you can remove them easier.  I keep cinnamon sticks for several recipes.  I

I added anise star and whole cloves.  I did not add whole nutmeg because I didn't have any.

You could also add some mulling spices instead of using spices.  I'd use 2 tablespoons for this Instant Pot apple cider recipe.

Or learn how to make your own mulling spices.

Sugar

I prefer not to add sweetener to my drinks, but this did need some sugar.  I used 1/4 cup for a lightly sweetened drink.

You could add up to 1/2 cup if you want.

For fewer calories, you can use Splenda brown sugar blend.  This is brown sugar and Splenda.  I use it for my neighbor, and it is very sweet.  Use half of what you'll think you need and add more as needed.

You can also use a Truvia brown sugar blend.  It has 75 percent fewer calories than brown sugar.  I haven't used it, so I don't know how sweet it is.

Lock the lid to the Instant Pot and turn the valve to sealing.  Pressure cook on high for 10 minutes.  Let naturally release.

Step #4

Remove the lid and use a potato masher to mash the fruit.

Step #5

Carefully pour juice through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.  Use the back of a spoon to press the solids to get as much juice out as you can.
