What is the Difference Between Apple Pie Spice and Pumpkin Pie Spice?
Apple pie spice and pumpkin pie spice are very similar. Both have cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. Apple pie spice usually has cardamom, too.
The key difference is that pumpkin pie spice has cloves, and apple pie spice does not.
Where to Buy Spices
I live in Amish country, so I get most of my spices from an Amish bulk food store. There is a big difference between bulk spices and what you get from the store.
If you can't buy bulk spices locally, I recommend getting them on Etsy or iHerb. If you get them from a grocery store, I recommend buying organic and high quality spices.
Those 99 cent jars will work, but you'll get more flavor from higher priced spices.
Recipes Using Pumpkin Pie Spice
I use pumpkin pie spice for several different recipes, including in my coffee creamer, desserts, and even in soaps!
Here are some pumpkin recipes that you can use this spice blend in:
- Easy Pumpkin Butter Recipe (replace the spices in the recipe with pumpkin pie spice)
- Baked Pumpkin Doughnuts
- Pumpkin Spice Iced Latte
- Pumpkin Yeast Bread Recipe
- Instant Pot Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer
- Pumpkin Spice Latte Melt and Pour Soap
Storing Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
Your pumpkin pie spice will last about 6 months. I usually make one batch at a time because I don't want to waste spices.
You can store it in the fridge up to a year.
Spices are dry and don't really go bad, but they will lose their potency.
Since I buy spices in bulk, I bought spice storage jars. I really like the bigger size of these. I can store a little more than a store bought jar of spices in each jar.
