Dinosaur Ornament Dollar Tree Christmas Ornament Idea

Learn how to make a dinosaur ornament Dollar Tree Christmas ornament idea.  This uses supplies from Dollar Tree to make an adorable keepsake ornament that your dinosaur fan is sure to love.

My son has been obsessed with dinosaurs since he was a toddler.  Every chance he had to watch a show about them or see them in a museum, he was all over it.

It amazed me what he knew even in elementary school!  He knew the names of several obscure dinosaurs, what they ate, and a myriad of facts about them.

For Christmas, I like to get the kids ornaments that have to do with their interests.  Somehow, he had never gotten a dinosaur ornament.

So this year, I made him a Dollar Tree Christmas ornament idea with a dinosaur.  Dollar Tree has several smaller animal figurines, so feel free to adapt this to another animal or character.

Cardstock

You should use red cardstock because it's thicker and can hold it's shape better.  However, you can probably use printer paper for the white part.

I just used regular scrapbooking cardstock.  It was actually a scrap from another project.

Dollar Tree Supplies

I'm calling this a Dollar Tree ornament because most of the supplies are from Dollar Tree.  I used craft pom poms from Dollar Tree.

If you can't find them, this is an inexpensive alternative.  This set actually comes with several sizes, so you can use the right size and still have plenty left over for other projects.

The 1 inch dinosaurs are also from Dollar Tree.  Amazon has this set of more realistic dinosaurs or this set of colorful dinosaurs.  The colorful ones are taller, so you may have to adjust the placement of the tree or leave it out.

The mason jar ornaments go quick at Dollar Tree!  I pick up several as soon as I see them before they sell out.

If your store is already sold out, you can try getting them on Amazon.

If your store is out of the faux snow, you can also get that on Amazon.

I don't even remember where I got the sparkly pipe cleaner.  It could have been Dollar Tree, but I'm not sure.

However, Amazon has a set that also has pom poms, so you can get both at the same time.

Dinosaur Dollar Tree Christmas Ornament Directions

Step #1

To make the Santa hat, use the bottle of Tacky glue or another circular object about 1.5 inches in diameter on the edge of the cardstock.  Trace a half circle on the cardstock with pencil.  Then cut out the red half circle.

Step #2

Place the red half circle on the white cardstock and trace it.  Cut the whole white half circle and then cut that into a smaller semi-circle about 1/4 inch wide.  You should have a rainbow shape.

Step #3

Fold the red half circle into a cone.  Use tacky glue or white glue to attach at the seam.  Use glue to attach the white part of the hat to the cone.

Step #4

Add a white pom pom on top of the hat with glue.  Then glue the hat on the dinosaur's head.

Step #5

Use hot glue to attach the mini tree to the inside of the ornament lid.  Then glue the dinosaur on the other side of the lid.

Step #6

Cut a piece of pipe cleaner 1 1/2 inches long.  Bend it to make a curve.  Then hot glue pom poms in alternating colors.  Use hot glue on the ends to carefully attach it inside the top of ornament.

I slid it in and held in place.  Use a pencil to adjust it if needed.

Step #7

Turn the ornament upside down and pour in fake snow.  Attach the lid.

Step #8

Cut a piece of ribbon about 12 inches long.  Thread it through the ornament hook and tie into a bow.

I added a few more ribbons just because I'm extra.

And you're done!  If you can't find a cute dinosaur ornament for your dinosaur lover, then make this Dollar Tree Christmas ornament idea.

This would be really cute with other animals.  I think I'll go back and try to find him a bear or maybe a cat to make a few more.
