How to make an inexpensive and easy DIY essential oil car diffuser. This hanging diffuser can also be used in a bath, office, closet, or other small space. This is a Dollar Tree craft, and all supplies were from there.
I use essential oils everyday when I'm home, and now I can take them with me on the road. I made this cute DIY essential oil diffuser for car as an inexpensive way to use oils for aromatherapy while traveling.
This is a passive diffuser, so it doesn't need batteries. It works by clipping it to the vents in your car. When you turn on the fan, it blows the scent through the car for aromatherapy.
We just got a new Dollar Tree in the next town over. I love Dollar Tree for crafting supplies because I can find some unusual stuff there to either repurpose or to use to make things.
I challenged myself to find something that I could use only Dollar Tree supplies to make, and I was able to get everything that I needed for this DIY essential oil car diffuser from there.
DIY Essential Oil Car Diffuser
A few years ago, I made a clothespin style DIY essential oil diffuser for the car that ended up being really popular.
It turned out cute and works well. However, I didn't like how far it stuck out. I was constantly knocking it off of the vent.
This hanging essential oil diffuser doesn't stick out as far, but it will fall off if you bump it too hard.
This style is also better for closets or small spaces. I have one hanging inside a cabinet in the bathroom to freshen the air.
You can also try this cute DIY tassel essential oil diffuser that's similar to macrame but easy to make.
Dollar Tree Supplies
I was excited to find all of the supplies from Dollar Tree. I found the pompoms, mini clothespins, and the bakers twine there.
I liked the fun colors of the pompoms, and the twine matches the colors really well.
For $3, I could make about 20 of these DIY essential oil car diffusers. Can't beat that price!
I will say that the pompoms were rather sparse. I would have rather there were fewer in a package for better looking pom poms.
But I liked the colors, and they work for this DIY essential oil car diffuser.
Essential Oils
You can use any essential oils for your DIY essential oil car diffuser, but do be mindful of your passengers. Some oils are only safe for 2+ and some for 10+.
If anyone who is pregnant, nursing, or elderly, be careful to check with a doctor before diffusing oils. You'll also have to check to see if the oils are dog safe if your dog rides in the car with you.
I use both single oils and blends. Some of my favorite blends are:
- Peace and Quiet
- Tranquility
- Happy Joy
- Head Soothing (this has lavender, so test it at home before driving)
For single oils, try one of the following:
- Lemon is uplifting and helps you focus and concentrate.
- Mandarin is calming without making you feel drowsy.
- Grapefruit is invigorating yet calming.
- Rosemary can help you focus.
- Eucalyptus can help prevent mental exhaustion.
- Spearmint can help reduce nausea.
- Cinnamon is uplifting.
- Coffee smells great and the scent can be invigorating.
Using Essential Oils in the Car Safely
Your car is a small space, so you'll need to use just a few drops of essential oils. That's why I like blends because you only need 1 to 2 drops.
Always check oils to be sure that they are safe to diffuse for you and your passengers.
Diffuse oils at home before using them in the car. The above oils should not make you drowsy, but it's best to know how you will react before driving.
There are some essential oils that you should avoid while driving They can be too calming and make you drowsy. As always, if you feel drowsy, pull over immediately.
Do not use the following oils when driving:
- Chamomile
- Geranium
- Lavender
- Marjoram
- Neroli
- Sandalwood
- Spikenard
- Valerian
- Vetiver

- Pompoms
- Mini clothespins
- Bakers twine
- Needle
- Scissors
DIY Essential Oil Car Diffuser Directions
Step #1
Thread your needle with the baker's twine and place pompoms on the string. I used 5 pompoms, but you can use more or less.
Step #2
Run the needle through the circle on the clothespin to attach it.
Step #3
Then go back down through the pompoms to help secure them. Tie a knot on the end and cut the string.
That's it! Hang it on your car vent and place 1-2 drops of essential oils on the pompoms. It will passively diffuse. If you want it stronger, turn on the heat or air conditioning to blow the scent through the car.
If the scent is too strong, place it on the passenger side or in the back if there are no passengers.
You can also hang it in the bath, in a closet, or anywhere that you'd like.
Add 1-2 drops of essential oils to refresh as needed.
