How to make heart shaped Valentine's Day hot cocoa chocolate bombs with marshmallows. This is a fun treat that makes a great gift for both kids and adults.
Although Valentine's Day is still about 6 weeks away, I'm getting my recipes ready so I can share them with you. Hot cocoa chocolate bombs were crazy popular for Christmas, and I think they will remain popular for a while.
Hot chocolate bombs were a Tiktok craze that quickly went to Instagram reels. They are like a bath bomb, but instead of using them in a bath, you drop them in hot water or milk for a fun drink.
For Valentine's Day hot cocoa chocolate bombs with marshmallows, I used a cute heart shaped mold. This is basically the same recipe, but I use pink chocolate instead of a milk chocolate.
Colored chocolate wafers are a white chocolate flavor. The white chocolate complements the milk chocolate in the drink mix very well, and you'll have a rich cup of hot cocoa with both white chocolate and milk chocolate flavors.
Valentine's Day Hot Cocoa Chocolate Bombs With Marshmallows
While this is a Valentine's Day hot cocoa chocolate bomb recipe, I also have a post on how to make hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows. Then I made melting snowman hot chocolate bombs for a fun twist on the recipe.
The recipes are similar, but they show how you can get creative with the ingredients to make a fun hot cocoa bomb with variations.

How Do You Use a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are so fun to use! You simply fill a cup with hot milk or hot water. Then place the Valentine's Day hot cocoa chocolate bomb inside.
The outer chocolate shell melts, and the hot cocoa powder comes out. Then stir and enjoy!
How Long Do Hot Cocoa Bombs Last?
If you use a dry hot cocoa mix, then your hot cocoa bomb will last for 2 months at room temperature.
Chocolate
A lot of recipes call for milk chocolate or white chocolate chips. While you can use chocolate chips to make hot chocolate bombs, I prefer to use chocolate wafers.
I also don't recommend using a Hershey's chocolate bar because it's too soft. It will melt at a lower temperature, which will ruin your hot cocoa bomb.
Chocolate wafers come in different colors. Since chocolate is oil based, you can't use food coloring because it's water based. This can make your chocolate become a clumpy mess.
For me, it's just easier to start with a pink chocolate wafer. I get them in bulk at the bulk store, or you can get them in bulk on Etsy.
If you want keto or sugar free hot cocoa bombs, you can use no sugar added white chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. They will be heart shaped, but you won't have pink Valentine's Day hot cocoa bombs with marshmallows.
If you do use chocolate chips, then add 2 teaspoons of refined coconut oil per cup of chocolate. This will help it melt and pour better and set up better.
How to Melt Chocolate for Hot Cocoa Bombs
You can melt your chocolate in a double boiler, in the microwave, or with a chocolate melter. People have their favorite methods, and I'll go over them and explain the pros and cons.
Microwave
Most people use the microwave because it's quick and easy. However, chocolate can burn in a microwave, so be careful and keep an eye on it.
You'll melt your chocolate in a microwave safe bowl in 20 second intervals. Stir well at each interval. If you can stir out lumps, do this instead of microwaving again.
Double Boiler
A double boiler is easy to set up at home, but it takes longer than the microwave. You can buy a double boiler insert that fits inside your favorite pan.
Or you can use a glass bowl that sets inside of a pan of water. Either way, make sure the bowl of chocolate doesn't sit on the bottom of the pan because it can burn.
You can also learn how to use an Instant Pot as a double boiler to melt chocolate.
To melt chocolate in a double boiler, heat water over low to low/medium heat. Place chocolate in a bowl and set on top.
Heat until melted. Stir every few minutes. Do not place a lid on top because it can collect condensation that can drip back down into the pan.
Chocolate Melter
My favorite way to melt chocolate for hot cocoa bombs is in a chocolate melter. I use the Wilton melting pot.
Simply place your chocolate wafers or chips in the pot and turn it on. You don't have to watch it, but you need to stir it every few minutes.
Clean up is easy. Turn it off and let the chocolate cool, then remove the chocolate and store. The insert is silicone, so it cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher.
Hot Cocoa Mix
You can use your favorite hot cocoa mix to make Valentine's Day hot cocoa chocolate bombs with marshmallows.
You can buy a hot chocolate mix or make one yourself. I like this sugar free hot cocoa mix recipe.
This white hot chocolate mix is also delicious in these hot cocoa bombs.
Valentine's Day Hot Cocoa Bomb Mold
For Valentine's Day, I used this cute heart shaped mold. I really like the geometric almost diamond shapes on the hearts.
You can also use this half sphere mold if you want a traditional round hot cocoa bomb.
Edible Markers
I used a dark pink chocolate, so I didn't write on mine. However, if you want to write a name or a message on the Valentine's Day hot cocoa chocolate bombs, you can do that with edible markers.
Valentine's Day Hot Cocoa Bomb Variations
I used a milk chocolate mix and marshmallows, but you can get creative. Try these hot chocolate bomb variations:
- Drizzle melted chocolate over the bombs
- Add heart shaped candy sprinkles inside
- Use pink or heart shaped marshmallows
- Use cappuccino mix instead of hot chocolate mix

- 1 cup mini marshmallows
Valentine's Day Hot Cocoa Bombs Directions
Step #1
Melt pink chocolate wafers in a double boiler, in the microwave, or in a chocolate melter.
Step #2
Pour a spoonful of melted chocolate into the molds. Tilt the mold or use a clean brush to cover the mold. Add more chocolate as needed to cover half of the mold. Place in the freezer for 5 minutes.
Step #3
Gently remove the chocolate from the molds. If the edges are jagged, heat a pan over low heat and carefully press the chocolate over the warm pan. This will melt the chocolate so it's smooth.
Step #4
Fill one side of each hot cocoa bomb with 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix and 2 tablespoons of mini marshmallows.
Step #5
Carefully melt the bottom of the other half of the heart on your warm pan. Then carefully place the top on the bottom. Use melted chocolate on a brush to fill in gaps if necessary.
