How to make a DIY essential oil gel air freshener to scent your home naturally. This is easy to make and lasts for several months. These also work great in the car as long as it's not too hot. This is an essential oil air freshener recipe made with natural ingredients for a natural home.
If you have pets or kids, then you probably need an air freshener at some point. Between the litter boxes and putting the ADHD kid in charge of trash duty, let's just say I've had a need for one recently.
I also want to keep my home smelling fresh because we have therapists coming a few times a week. I just like having a nice smelling home.
I used to use my tart burner all the time, but I have to be careful with it because we have cats. When a cat steps in melted wax, they instinctively shake their paw and fling wax all over the walls and ceiling.
Yes, that happened to my poor Luie several years ago.
I use my diffuser, but I like these for the bedroom or the bathroom where my diffuser doesn't really reach. I can still use essential oils for a natural scent.
This gel air freshener DIY is really easy to make in about 15 minutes, but they do take a full day to set up.
These would make great gifts. They are fairly easy to make, so you could make a few batches and make several gifts in an hour.
This essential oil air freshener recipe works well in the home and in the car. If you're using it in the car, you definitely want a lid so it doesn't tip over and get hot in the sun and melt.
How to Make Gel Air Fresheners
This gel air freshener DIY is so easy to make, and you can easily double the recipe if you want to make more. I used 4-ounce mason jars so I could make two different scents. You could use an 8-ounce jelly jar, but the smaller jars work just fine.
Gelatin
I used Knox unflavored gelatin for this DIY essential oil gel air freshener because it's inexpensive and easy to find at most grocery stores. It comes in four to a box in the store, so you can double this recipe or save some to make more air fresheners.
I also use unflavored gelatin to make jelly soap, so you can make a batch of soap and these essential oil gel air fresheners from the same box.
On Amazon, it comes in 32 to a pack, so it's quite a bit cheaper per pack than what I paid at the grocery store.
You can also get gelatin in bulk on Etsy. I buy mine in bulk normally, and it saves quite a bit of money. If you plan on making several essential oil air freshener recipes for gifts, it's best to buy it in bulk.
Salt
I added salt to prevent mold from growing in my gel air freshener DIY. Any time you make something with water, mold or bacteria can grow. In DIY beauty recipes, you'd have to use a preservative or use it right away.
Since this won't touch your skin, the salt should be enough to slow the growth of bacteria or mold.
There is still a chance that they can grow mold, but you toss the gel when these lose their scent anyway.
Essential Oils
I wanted to have two different scents for my DIY essential oil gel air freshener, so I made two smaller 4-ounce jars. You can make them the same scent or use different scents.
For my bath, I used Apple Pie Spice essential oil blend. It's a blend of cassia, nutmeg, allspice, and cardamom. Although it doesn't have apple in it, it does smell like an apple pie baking. It's very crisp, just like an apple pie.
I also used Happiness essential oil blend. It's a light, fresh blend. I wanted to put it in my office, so I wanted something, well, happy because I have a lot of people coming in and out of my office.
Happiness is a blend of:
- Patchouli
- Lavender
- Orange
- Ylang ylang
- Amyris
- Cassia
- Clove
- Ginger
- Magnolia
- Lemon
- Myrhh
- Peppermint
- Pine
- Rose
You can use any essential oil or blend that you'd like. Some fun ones would be lemon, lime, or vanilla.
Simply Earth has a few blends that would be perfect for DIY essential oil gel air fresheners. I recommend Happy Joy, Tranquility, Clean and Fresh, Liquid Luck, or Citrus Burst.
Wood Lid Inserts
The wood inserts aren't absolutely necessary, but if you don't have a lid on these gel air freshener DIY, they will dry out quicker.
I just love the looks of these wood inserts. I used them in my DIY natural air freshener with baking soda. You could even paint them or ink them, but I like the look of natural wood.
Gel Air Freshener DIY Ingredients
- 1 cup water (separated into 3/4 cup and 1/4 cup)
- 2 packs Knox unflavored gelatin
- 1 tablespoon table salt
- 1-2 teaspoons essential oils (I used Apple Pie Spice and Happiness)
- 4-ounce mason jars
- Wood mason jar lid inserts (This metal one is also cute. Seed sprouter lids would also work well.)
- Food coloring
Gel Air Freshener DIY Directions
STEP #1
Heat 3/4 cup water and the salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until salt is completely dissolved.
STEP #2
Slowly add the gelatin and stir well.
I barely tapped the gelatin pack to just sprinkle it on while I stirred. If you add it too quickly, it will clump. Stir until completely dissolved. I used a whisk.
STEP #3
Remove from heat and add 1/4 cup water.
STEP #4
Carefully pour into the mason jars. This recipe made just over two 4-ounce mason jars essential oil gel air freshener recipe.
STEP #5
Add up to 1 teaspoon essential oil per jar.
You can also add 1-2 drops of food coloring if you want. I added 2 red to the apple pie spice and 1 red and 1 blue to the Happiness blend. I used a skewer to stir them so I didn't stain or get oils on a spoon.
Let your gel air freshener DIY sit undisturbed for 24 hours, and now you have a DIY essential oil gel air freshener.
These will dry out, but the wood insert helps them last longer.
My son thought they were gelatin, so be sure to keep them out of reach of children while they are setting up and when you display them.
The gelatin and salt are natural, but it's probably not good to ingest that much essential oils.
When your gel air freshener DIY loses its scent, toss the gel and make a new batch of essential oil gel air fresheners.
Now you know how to make gel air fresheners!
