Instant Pot Chicken Broth Recipe

How to make Instant Pot chicken broth recipe with a whole chicken carcass.  These Instant Pot bone broth directions are easy to follow and make a delicious broth to use in soups or other recipes.

My dad and stepmom got me an Instant Pot for Christmas.  I think they were expecting me to cook dinner in it, but I made lotion in my Instant Pot.

After I cleaned it out, I did use it to make food.  I love making a whole chicken, beef roasts, and pork chops in it.

If you use an Instant Pot, then you know that you'll use a lot of chicken broth.  It needs a lot of water, and the broth just infuses flavor in your meat and makes it tender.

I've been making my own broth for years.  Normally, this means simmering a pot on the stove for hours and carefully watching it so it doesn't boil over.

I tried making it in the Instant Pot, and that's how I'll be making it from now on.

I just had to throw my ingredients in the liner, fill with water, and turn it on for 75 minutes.  Since you let it naturally release, I literally turned it on and walked away for a few hours.

If you've never made your own broth, then you're in for a treat.  It has more flavor than store bought broth.  It's not as salty as using bullion, and I think bullion has a fake flavor anyway.

Making your own broth is inexpensive or even free when you use scraps.

Instant Pot Chicken Broth Recipe With Bones

If you don't have an Instant Pot, I love my 6 quart Instant Pot Duo 7 in 1.  They do have a larger model for bigger families, but my family of 5 can use the 6 quart.  It's the perfect size for our main meal or a big batch of soup.

I use my Instant Pot at least twice a week.  Not only does it make awesome food, but it's also helped me get out of my cooking rut and try new recipes.

Bone Broth vs Chicken Stock

So what's the difference?  Not much.

A stock is typically made with bits of meat and is thinner than bone broth.  Bone broth is made with the bones, so it has more collagen in it.  For the home cook, they are interchangeable.

You can use this Instant Pot chicken broth recipe as a bone broth or in recipes as chicken stock.  I use it in recipes like soups and for broth for my Instant Pot recipes.

You can also omit the chicken and make an Instant Pot vegetable stock recipe.

Benefits of Bone Broth

An Instant Pot bone broth recipe has a lot of benefits for your overall health.  It's high in minerals like calcium, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, and magnesium.

It's also a natural source of glucosamine.  You've probably heard of glucosamine to promote joint health.  This is a natural way to add more to your diet.

Bone broth also has gelatin.  Gelatin helps strengthen your hair and nails, so it can even make you prettier!

Well, your nails and hair will be healthier and stronger anyway.  Gelatin also helps promote collagen production thanks to the proline amino acid.  Both gelatin and and boosted collagen production can help prevent the signs of aging.

I also like knowing that my broth is made with no additives or artificial flavors or colors.

Is Instant Pot Bone Broth as Healthy?

Yes, Instant Pot bone broth can be as healthy as stove top or slow cooker bone broth.  You can tell that it's good Instant Pot bone broth recipe when it gels.

You will need to cook it for 120 minutes to get it to gel.  I've cooked it for as low as 60 minutes, and it makes a wonderful broth but does not gel.

What to Add to Instant Pot Chicken Broth Recipe

I'll give you a base recipe that you can start with, but you can definitely modify it to fit your family and its needs.

I typically use celery, onions, garlic, and carrots.

I keep my food scraps in a bag in the freezer.  I use the ends of carrots and celery and onion peels.  I'll also throw in vegetables that are starting to go bad but aren't bad yet, like soft carrots or wilted celery.

I will also throw in mushrooms or other veggies except broccoli, cauliflower, or green peppers because they don't work well with this Instant Pot chicken broth recipe.

I use a bay leaf, parsley, and thyme.  Sometimes I also add peppercorns.  You can use other herbs and spices; it's up to you.

I made a whole chicken in my Instant Pot last week, so I saved the bones from that to make this Instant Pot bone broth recipe.

You can also save chicken, fish, beef, or pork bones to use.  I keep them in the same bag as my veggie scraps, so I can throw them all in at once.

Instant Pot Chicken Broth Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 chicken carcass
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 1 onion (quartered)
  • 2 clove of garlic
  • 1 teaspoon parsley
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 bay leaf

Instant Pot Chicken Broth Recipe Directions

Step #1

Place the bones and vegetables in an Instant Pot.

Step #2

Fill with water to about an inch above the vegetables and bones.  Do not fill past the max fill line.

Step #3

Use the high pressure setting for at least 60 minutes  You can cook it for as long as 120 minutes for bone broth.

Step #4

Let the Instant Pot release naturally.  I let mine go for about an hour after it finished just because I was busy.

Step #5

Strain the broth to remove the solids.  I just use my colander because it has small holes at the bottom.  I don't worry if there are small bits and some herbs in my broth.

Step #6

Place the broth in the fridge overnight.  This helps the fat float to the top.

Remove the fat after it sits overnight.

Step #7

Remove the fat with a spoon.

I got about 6 cups of broth from one chicken carcass.

Your Instant Pot bone broth recipe is now ready to use.  You could use it before it sits in the fridge all night, but know that there will be some fat in your broth.

If that's fine with you, then by all means use it then.  I really didn't get much fat out of my broth even after it sat all night.

You can now pressure can your broth, freeze it, or store it in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can You Can Broth in an Instant Pot?

I wish you could use the Instant Pot to pressure can it, but it doesn't get to a high enough pressure.  I've heard that they are making one that will be able to pressure can, so I'm excited to try that when it comes out.

For now, I freeze my broth.  I either put it in freezer containers with 2 cups in each container or pour into an ice cube tray.  Then I freeze the cubes to use in recipes.  Each cube is an ounce of broth.  I really like to use silicone ice cube trays because the broth cubes come out easier.

I really like these containers with the twist lids for freezing broth.

How to Use Instant Pot Chicken Broth Recipe

I use my Instant Pot bone broth recipe whenever I need chicken stock.  I mainly use it in soups, but I'll also use it in mashed potatoes in place of some of the milk.  I've even boiled noodles in broth to infuse them with flavor.

This Instant Pot chicken broth is my secret ingredient for my broccoli cheese soup recipe.

One thing to keep in mind is that this Instant Pot bone broth recipe tastes better than what you buy in the stores, but it doesn't have any added salt.  You may need to add salt to your recipe.
