Succulent DIY Essential Oil Diffuser (Dollar Tree Craft)

Learn how to make your own essential oil diffuser.  This succulent DIY essential oil diffuser is easy to make in under 10 minutes.  It's a Dollar Tree craft, so it's inexpensive to make.  This makes a great diffuser for an office, bedroom, or other small space because it's pretty as well as functional.

I use my essential oils in several different ways, but the method that I use most is diffusing.  I diffuse oils during the day to uplift my mood or to help me concentrate, and I diffuse at night to promote relaxation and sleep.

I do use an electric diffuser in the main living area, but for smaller spaces I use passive diffusion.

I like the passive diffusion because I don't have to worry about water.  I use the same oils or blends often, so I don't need to worry about mixing all of my oils.

I was using a water diffuser in my office, but it was a pain to go get water for it and to clean it when it needed cleaning.

So I made this rock oil diffuser for passive diffusion.

Succulent DIY Essential Oil Diffuser

This succulent diffuser is a Dollar Tree craft, so it's inexpensive to make.  I actually had everything in my stash from projects that I meant to do but never got done.

If you had to buy everything, it would cost $3 or more depending on how many succulents you use.

What is a Succulent Diffuser?

Some people use real succulents for a DIY essential oil diffuser.  I used fake succulents because I have cats.

My cats will try to eat the real succulents and knock it over.  They don't touch my faux succulent diffuser.

If you want to make a succulent essential oil diffuser with real succulents, you'll follow pretty much the same directions.

However, you will want to use rocks on the bottom of the bowl and add potting oil on top.  Plant the succulents in the soil.

Then top with lava rocks or moss to make a lava rock room diffuser.  You'll apply the oils to the moss or lava rocks.  Use 1-2 drops at a time because too much can affect your succulents.

How Do I Diffuse Essential Oils Without a Diffuser?

If you don't have an electric diffuser, you can make a DIY essential oil diffuser with passive diffusion.  I've made several, including this succulent essential oil diffuser.

You can read these posts to learn how to make a essential oil diffuser:

This rock oil diffuser is a passive diffuser.  The oils slowly evaporate over several hours with a light throw.

This lava rock diffuser for desk is best for small spaces or when you can be close to it.  I use a passive diffuser beside my bed and at my desk while I'm working.

Do You Need a Carrier Oil for Diffuser?

No, you do not need to use a carrier oil for this DIY essential oil diffuser.  You can put the oils directly on the rocks to create an easy lava rock room diffuser.

What Is a Lava Rock Diffuser?

Lava rocks are porous rocks made of concrete and lava rock.  They have small holes on the outside of them that absorb essential oils and slowly release them when you use a lava rock room diffuser.

Lava rocks would be best for this succulent diffuser, but I used river rocks from Dollar Tree (you can also find river rocks on Amazon).  They are porous enough to hold essential oils and slowly release them over a few hours.

How Does a Stone Diffuser Work?

A rock oil diffuser works by absorbing essential oils and slowly releasing them as they evaporate.  Essential oils evaporate fairly quickly, so a lava rock room diffuser will last anywhere from a few hours to a day or two.

How Do You Use a Lava Rock Diffuser?

A rock oil diffuser is very easy to use.  Simply add about 5 to 8 drops of your essential oils or a blend to the rocks.  The rocks absorb the oils and then slowly release them.

There's no need to add water or a carrier oil.  This succulent essential oil diffuser uses faux plants, so you don't need to water it.

Can You Clean Lava Rocks?

Yes, you can clean lava rocks and the river rocks that I used in this DIY essential oil diffuser.  They can start to accumulate several different oils or get dusty over time.

To clean them, simply soak them in hot water with some dish soap.  I like to swirl around the water to really get them clean.

Then put them in a strainer and rinse well.  Let dry completely before reusing to recreate your succulent essential oil diffuser.

Essential Oil Blends for Your Succulent Diffuser

You can use any essential oil or blend in your lava rock diffuser.  If you want to create your own blend, you can use separate oils directly on the succulent diffuser.  Just make sure that you use 5 to 8 drops at a time.

Alternately, you can create a master blend and use that directly on the lava rock diffuser for desk.  I like to use 5 ml bottles for making blends.

I like to use premade blends.  A few of my favorites are:

Succulent Diffuser Supplies

To make a lava rock diffuser for desk, you will need the following supplies:

  • Lava rocks or river rocks.  I got my river rocks at Dollar Tree, but lava rocks would be better to use.
  • Faux succulents.  I got mine from Dollar Tree (here or here) or find them on Etsy.
  • Bowl

Succulent Diffuser Directions

Making this DIY essential oil diffuser is easy.  Feel free to get creative with it.

Step #1

Place river rocks or lava rocks in a bowl.

Step #2

Add faux succulents.  I used one large for my large bowl and three small ones for the smaller bowl.

Step #3

Add 5 to 8 drops of essential oils when you want to diffuser essential oils.

This lava rock diffuser will throw a scent for a few hours.  Add more oils as needed to diffuse more oils.

You can add different oils or blends, but eventually the scents may start to blend together.  You can wash the stones with soap water and reuse them.

Now you know how to make your own essential oil diffuser.  I hope this inspires you to make your own rock oil diffuser.
