How to Make Red Velvet Cookies With Cake Mix

How to make red velvet cookies with cake mix.  These cookies are delicious and so easy to make in about 15 minutes.  You can make 2 to 3 dozen red velvet cookies out of cake mix, depending on how big your cookies are.

My kids are teenagers now, and they all like to cook and bake.  We used cooking in homeschooling to learn about math and science, so they've been making cookies and other recipes since they were toddlers.

Of course, then they were just adding pre measured ingredients and stirring, but now they can all make recipes by themselves.

These red velvet cake mix cookies are perfect for kids to help make since there's not a lot of ingredients to measure.  They are also good for those times when you forgot that you need to take a few dozen cookies in for a bake sale.  Oops.

Is Cookie Mix the Same as Cake Mix?

Cookie mix and cake mix have similar ingredients, but the ratios are off.  A cookie mix is thicker than a cake mix when you prepare it.

What's the Difference Between Red Velvet Cake Mix and Chocolate Cake Mix?

Red velvet cake and chocolate cake are similar and both have cocoa powder in them.  However, red velvet cake has buttermilk and vinegar, which gives it a slightly acidic taste.

A red velvet cake mix has less cocoa powder in it than a chocolate cake mix.  It's a subtle chocolate flavor, which complements the white chocolate chips well.

You can use this red velvet cookies recipe cake mix and use a chocolate cake mix. The taste and color will change, but they will still be delicious.

What is the Best Box Red Velvet Cake Mix?

I used a Betty Crocker Super Moist Red Velvet cake mix to make my red velvet cookies out of cake mix.  You can use any brand.  I like the Walmart generic cake mixes too.

How Do I Thicken a Cake Mix for Cookies?

The ratio of cake mix, eggs, and oil are tested in this red velvet cake mix cookies recipes, but different cake mixes may alter your recipe.

If your batter is too thin, then you can add all purpose flour to thicken it.

Can You Substitute Butter for Oil in Cake Mix Cookies?

Yes, you can use the same amount of butter as the oil to make red velvet cookies out of cake mix.  Butter will give it a richer flavor, but the oil makes it moist.

I recommend melting the butter so it gets fully incorporated in the batter.  Then place the batter in the fridge for an hour before making red velvet cake mix cookies.  Learn how to make butter from cream in a mixer.

How to Make Red Velvet Bar Cookies With Cake Mix

Although this red velvet cake mix cookies recipe is simple, it's even easier when you make a bar cookie.  To do this, follow the same recipe to make the batter.

Then spread the batter in a 9x13 pan.  Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes.

Red Velvet Cake Mix Cookies Recipe Variations

Here are some ways that you can customize your red velvet cake mix cookies:

  • Use melted butter instead of oil.
