My daughter loves unicorns, and she loves decorating cakes and cupcakes. So we looked at unicorn cupcake ideas and decided to make tie dye cupcakes from scratch with a pastel theme for unicorns.
We made them just for fun, but these are great birthday rainbow unicorn cupcakes. They are easier to make than they look, and you can make them at home even if you're not a great cake or cupcake decorator.
I made this rainbow unicorn cupcakes recipe from scratch. Both the cupcakes and frosting are made from scratch, but you can use a box mix.

How Do You Make a Unicorn Cupcake?
I made my rainbow unicorn cupcakes from scratch. I then divided the batter into three bowls and used food coloring to make pastel colors.
Then I alternated the colors to create uneven layers in the cupcake tin. This creates unicorn tie dye cupcakes from scratch.
You could also make your unicorn cupcakes all one color or leave them white.
How Do You Decorate a Rainbow Unicorn Cupcakes Recipe?
There are several unicorn cupcake ideas. You can make the top flat and draw on a unicorn face. You can also pipe the icing in a swirl and use the Wilton unicorn cupcake decorating set.

How Do You Make Fondant Unicorn Ears and Horn?
I used the Wilton unicorn cupcake decorating set, so I didn't have to make the fondant ears. However, you can make your own unicorn ears, horn, and eyelashes with this 10 pieces silicone mold set.
It has several sizes of horns and ears, so you can make the right size for cupcakes or a cake.
Can I Use Boxed Cake Mix to Make Tie Dye Cupcakes From Scratch?
Yes, you can absolutely used a boxed cake mix to learn how to make unicorn cupcakes. Simply skip the cake batter part of the directions and start with the step where you will separate the batter into three bowls.
You can use any white cake mix or try one of these boxed cake mix hacks to make the cake more moist or add flavor.
Can I Used Canned Frosting to Make Rainbow Unicorn Cupcakes?
Although I'll use a boxed cake mix any day, I'm not a big fan of canned frosting. It doesn't have the consistency for decorating. I recommend making frosting from scratch for these birthday rainbow unicorn cupcakes.
If you do want to use canned frosting, it may not pipe well. You may want to use the edible cake toppers instead of swirling the frosting.
Rainbow Unicorn Cupcakes Recipe Ingredients
You will need the following to make tie dye cupcakes from scratch:
- 2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1- 3.56 oz box of vanilla pudding
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 4 egg whites
- 1/2 cup vanilla coffee creamer or milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (how to make vanilla extract from vanilla beans or make Instant Pot vanilla extract)
- Yellow, pink, and teal food coloring (I like to use natural food coloring. You can also make fruit powder for a natural color)
You will need the following to make buttercream frosting for your rainbow unicorn cupcakes:
- 1 stick salted butter, softened
- 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoons vanilla coffee creamer
- Yellow, pink, and teal food coloring
- 3 small piping bags and 1 large piping bag or 1 tricolor piping kit
- 1 large frosting tip
- Edible glitter
- Wilton unicorn decorating kit
How to Make Unicorn Cupcakes
Follow these steps to make tie dye cupcakes from scratch:
Step #1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a muffin pan or use liners.
Step #2
Combine flour, sugar, pudding mix, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk dry ingredients together.
Step #3
Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to cream butter for 1 to 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Add cream cheese and mix until combined. Then add the vanilla and mix well. Add the egg whites and mix on low.
Step #4
Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Slowly add the vanilla creamer and mix on medium for 1 minute.
Step #5
Divide the birthday rainbow cupcakes recipe batter evenly between three small bowls. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and stir. Add more food coloring until you reach the desired color.
Use a spoon to add spoonfuls of alternating colors into the muffin tins. Fill about 2/3 full. This will make tie dye cupcakes from scratch. You can use a toothpick to swirl the colors if desired.
Bake for 15-17 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Transfer to a cooling rack and let cool completely before frosting.

In a large bowl or stand mixer, cream the butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add vanilla extract.

Separate the frosting into three small bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl and stir. Add more food coloring as needed until it's the desired color. Place one color of frosting in each of the three small piping bags. Place the three smaller bags into the large piping bag or connect to the tri-piping tip.
Step #4
Pipe the frosting onto each cupcake. Add the unicorn ears and horns. Sprinkle with white edible glitter if desired.
