How to Make Decoupage Coasters With Tiles
I saw the first flower in bloom of the year on the farm yesterday. That means that it's time to move from winter to spring with my decorating.
I have a cute set of wooden owl coasters that use in between seasons, but this year I decided to finally make a spring or summer set of napkin coasters.
I used cute sunflower napkins to make my ceramic tile coasters DIY. There are so many ways to make a tile coaster craft, but this is quick and easy.

Can You Use Ceramic Tiles as Coasters?
Yes, ceramic tiles make great coasters. You can use them plain or make a tile coaster craft. I have to be a little extra all the time, so I learned how to make coasters out of tiles.
You can buy ceramic coasters at a hardware store. I always look at our local Habitat for Humanity Restore for ceramic tiles.
They often have boxes that aren't full enough for a home improvement project, and this is a great way to repurpose leftover tiles.
What Tiles to Use for Coasters?
You can use regular ceramic tiles from the hardware store to make tile coasters DIY. However, you will need to add something so they don't scratch your table.
You can also buy ceramic coasters that come with cork backing pads. You can find them in squares, circles, and even hexagons.
What Do You Put on the Back of Coasters With Tile?
If you use ceramic tiles meant for home improvement, then you'll need to put something on the back to protect your table. If you don't use something, they can scratch the wood.
I used felt stickers, but you can also use thin sheets of cork or cover the entire back with a sheet of felt.
How Do You Seal Decoupage Coasters?
I like to use Mod Podge when I make tile coasters. Mod Podge will make your decoupage coasters waterproof, but you'll need to use about 3 coats of Mod Podge.
How Do You Make Coasters Not Stick?
Regular Mod Podge makes a great sealer for your napkin coasters, but it can get sticky in humidity. I like to use three coats of Mod Podge and follow with 1 to 2 thin coats of Mod Podge Hard Coat.
You can also just use the purple Hard Coat formula on the top of your Mod Podge, but I think the regular formula is thicker and makes a thicker coat on the top.
Can I Use Mod Podge on Napkins?
Yes, you can make tile coasters Mod Podge with napkins. One thing to note is that napkins get very fragile when wet. They are likely to rip or tear.
Be careful when smoothing out the napkin because it will tear. You can usually use your fingers to work it back in place and not even notice the tear.
How Do You Decoupage a Napkin Without Wrinkles?
I used a wet application, and my napkin coasters do have a few wrinkles. It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.
If you want a smooth finish, there's another technique that you can use:
- Coat the tile coasters DIY with Mod Podge and let dry completely.
- Cut the napkin to fit the coaster.
- Place the napkin on the coaster.
- Place a piece of parchment paper over the napkin.
- Heat an iron to 6. Slowly iron all over the coaster while moving the iron around. Make sure you get the edges and corners well.
- Let the decoupage coasters cool completely and seal.
Napkin Coasters Supplies
You will need the following to make file coasters:
- 4 inch ceramic coasters
- Sunflower napkins (I got mine at Dollar Tree, but you can also find them on Etsy.)
- Mod Podge
- Scissors
- Foam brush
- Tacky glue
- 3/8 inch felt stickers
How Do You Decoupage Coasters With Napkins?
Step #1
Open the napkin and cut out the quarter of the napkin with the sunflower on it.
Step #2
Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the top of the coaster. I also glued the sides.
Step #3
Set the napkin on the tile. Use your fingers to very carefully smooth out the napkin on the top and sides of the coaster. Start from the middle and work out so you don't tear the napkin.
Step #4
Use Mod Podge over the napkin to seal the napkin coasters. Let it dry and repeat with two more coats. I also recommend adding a coat of Hard Coat on top.
Step #5
Once the top coat of Mod Podge is fully dry, flip over the coaster. Use tacky glue to attach the felt circles to the back in each corner. Place them about 1/2 inch from each corner.
Now you know how to make coasters out of tiles. I hope you enjoy these decoupage coasters.
