Learn how to make coasters with fabric. These no sew fabric coasters are easy to make with glue instead of sewing. They use a mason jar lid, so this is a great way to use rings that have dents or are otherwise unusable.
How to Make Mason Jar Lid Coasters
I do a lot of canning each year. I take the rings off for storage so they don't rust, but I still manage to lose a few rings each year due to dents, dings, or surface rust.
These mason jar coasters DIY are perfect for reusing those metal rings. I used wide mouth jar rings so the drinks fit in them better.
If you have some canning rings that have a little bit of surface rust on them, this is a great way to use them up.
If you don't can or don't have rings, ask your friends. Someone probably has some to repurpose!

How Do You Make Coasters With Mason Jar Lids?
Mason jar lid coasters are pretty easy to make since the canning jar rings have the perfect size for coasters.
For these fabric coasters for drinks, you'll need both cork and fabric since we'll be using both materials.
How Many Sizes of Mason Jar Lids Are There?
There are two sizes of mason jar lids: regular mouth and wide mouth. Regular mouth lids are 2 3/8 inches in diameter, and wide mouth lids are 3 inches in diameter.
I used the larger wide mouth jar lids for mason jar coasters DIY.
What Material is Best for Coasters?
Since drinks can sweat and you can get easily get coasters well, I recommend making your fabric coasters for drinks with cork or something else that is absorbent.
Neoprene will also absorb moisture well if you want to just use printed or plain neoprene.
How Do You Make Homemade Coasters Waterproof?
I like to use Mod Podge to seal my mason jar lid coasters. Regular Mod Podge works very well as a glue and also as a sealer, but it gets sticky when it's wet.
Instead, I use Mod Podge Hard Coat in the purple bottle. It's a thinner formula, but it dries clear and isn't sticky at all.
I usually use 2 coats of Mod Podge Hard Coat for 1 coat of regular Mod Podge.
What Should You Put on the Bottom of Coasters?
You can put either thin pieces of cork or felt on the bottom of your DIY coasters fabric. This will protect your table from scratches.
You can either use felt sheets and cut them down to size or buy 3 inch felt circles pre cut.
Alternately, you can use thin pieces of cork or use these 3 inch cork circles. These cork circles are slightly bigger than the mason jar coasters, but you can cut them down.
DIY Coasters Fabric Variations
Here are some variations when you learn how to make coasters with fabric:
- I used a two piece ring and lid canning lid. You can also use a one piece lid like these galvanized reproduction vintage mason jar lids.
- Try painting the lids a different color or leaving them metal.
- I used fabric for my mason jar coasters DIY, but you can use a sticker on the cork if you want to.
- Add cork or felt to the bottom to prevent scratches.
- You can use used wide mouth canning lids for this fabric coasters tutorial. This is a great way to repurpose used lids.
Mason Jar Lid Coasters Supplies
You will need the following to make fabric coasters for drinks:
- 3 inch wide mouth mason jar rings and lids
- Fabric (I used three styles of fabric)
- Acrylic paint
- Foam brushes
- Mod Podge
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Tacky glue
How to Make Mason Jar Lid Coasters
Step #1
Wipe off the mason jar rings to make sure they are clean. Lay them on parchment paper and cover with two coats of acrylic paint. I used two coats of paint and let them dry for 30 minutes between coats.
Step #2
Once the paint is dry on the mason jar ring, use a new brush to coat the ring with Mod Podge and let dry. Then add another coat of Mod Podge.
Step #3
While the Mod Podge is drying on the rings, take a mason jar lid and place it on the cork. Trace around it and cut it out.
Step #4
Then place the lid on the fabric, trace, and cut out. If you use a fabric with a pattern, make sure to line up the pattern so it's centered on the mason jar lid coasters.
Step #5
Use the hot glue to attach the cork circles to the top of each of the mason jar lids.
Step #6
Place a circle of fabric on top of the lids and cover the lid with Mod Podge. Let dry and use another coat of Mod Podge.
Step #7
Use your hot glue gun to attach the fabric covered lid to the inside of the mason jar ring.
