What is a Butter Board TikTok?
I'm not sure where the viral butter board originated, but it's all over TikTok and Instagram. A butter charcuterie board is like a meat and cheese board, but the base is made with butter.
You can then add sweet or savory items on top or even make pretty shapes with the butter.
Then serve with bread or crackers or other dippers that go well with butter.
Why You'll Love the Butter Board Trend
Charcuterie boards are popular, but it's expensive to buy all of that meat and cheese. A butter board DIY is a lot cheaper to make!
You can easily customize your butter board recipe and use ingredients that you have on hand.
You can get as fancy as you'd like to make your butter board fingerboard. I made like flowers, but you can also just smear the butter on the wood board or make it a shape like a pumpkin or Christmas tree.
You can also make the wooden butter board ahead of time and put it in the fridge. This saves you from making it just before guests arrive or while they are there.
What Do You Do With a Butter Board?
A butter board DIY is a cute way to serve flavored butter as an appetizer. Simply create the butter board recipe and set it on the counter for guests.
Let them add the butter on top of bread or crackers for a quick appetizer or serve with dinner.
How Do You Eat from a Butter Board?
A lot of people are leery of using a butter board fingerboard because so many people are eating from the same board.
While your guests can dip their bread into the butter, you can also add one or two butter spreaders next to the board for guests to use.
Tips to Make Your Own Butter Boards
The viral butter board trend is fairly easy, but here are some tips:
- Since butter is the main ingredient, start with a high quality butter. I like Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter, but I've also used Aldi butter or Land O'Lakes. You can also use homemade butter to make this.
- Soften the butter so it spreads easier. The best way to soften butter is letting it sit on the counter until soft. Otherwise, you can microwave it for 5 seconds and then flip and microwave an additional 5 seconds. Be careful it doesn't melt though!
- Use an icing spreader or butter spreader to create waves in the softened butter.
- You can start with a flavored butter. I really like cinnamon sugar butter or honey butter. For a savory butter board recipe, use garlic and herb butter.
- The oil from the butter may soak into wood or marble. Don't use an expensive board to make this wooden butter board. You can use parchment paper to protect the board.
Butter Board DIY Toppings
You can add several different things on top of your butter, depending on your tastes. You can make it sweet or savory. I've also made it both in different areas of the board.
Here are some ideas for savory toppings:
- Herbs like parsley, oregano, thyme, rosemary
- Chives or green onions
- Lavender buds
- Rose petals
- Salt flakes
- Pumpkin puree
- Chopped nuts
- Craisins
- Orange zest
- Lemon zest
- Shredded cheese or cut cheese
- Seeds
- Thin sliced onions
- Roasted garlic
- Cream cheese, goat cheese, or other soft cheese
- Microgreens
- Chili oil
- Mint
- Black pepper
- Red pepper flakes
Here are some ideas for sweet toppings:
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Brown sugar
- Honey
- Maple syrup
- Candied nuts
- Pie filling
- Jam (Try zucchini bread jam, strawberry vanilla jam, or peach vanilla jam.)
- Chocolate shavings
- Figs
- Fresh berries
- Dried fruits
What to Serve With Butter Board Recipe
Here are some ideas to serve with your butter board DIY:
- Bread (Try this beer bread recipe or pumpkin yeast bread recipe for a savory board or a cake mix pumpkin bread recipe for a sweet board.)
- Crackers (I like wheat crackers.)
- Bagel chips
- Vanilla wafers
- Cut vegetables like broccoli, carrots, celery, radishes, or cauliflower
Can I Make Butter Board Recipe Ahead of Time?
You can make this viral butter board ahead of time and keep it in the fridge until ready to serve. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and place in the fridge.
I suggest adding the toppings as close to the party time as you can so they don't get soggy or start to wilt in the case of fresh herbs and edible flowers.
However, you can spread the butter and add the flakey salt and dried herbs and then place in the fridge.
When ready to serve, get it out of the fridge about 30 minutes before serving so the butter can soften.
How to Store Leftover Wooden Butter Board
You can easily store leftovers from your butter board recipe. Simply wrap in plastic wrap or place leftovers in an airtight container and place in the fridge.
You can then use it with crackers or bread or use it for cooking. Try using a savory butter to sauté steaks or chicken. You can also use it to make garlic bread or top steamed vegetables.

Step #1
Clean your board well with hot water and let dry completely. Meanwhile, soften the butter. Place the butter on the board and use a butter knife to form the shape of a flower.

Use fig jam to create the center of the flower. Arrange basil leaves around the flower.
